Meeting on the ledge

(or why I don't get out much…..)

Colin McRae

I know it isn’t the normal subject matter of this blog, but I felt I had to register my shock and sadness at the death of Colin McRae in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. Colin was something of a hero of mine: always competitive in a rally car, but laid-back and with a strong sense of humour outside. He was known as McCrash early in his career when his will to win sometimes outweighed the capabilities of his car, but despite his many crashes it is ironic that he was killed off the 4 (or sometimes 2) wheels he loved. He belonged to a former generation of rally drivers along with the (also sadly deceased) Richard Burns and Carlos Sainz who were allowed by their teams to show their personalities, and I remember an interview he and Richard did on TV a few years ago when, despite being on different teams, their friendship was very clear.  Our thoughts go out to his family.
