Meeting on the ledge

(or why I don't get out much…..)

Speedy reply

Until yesterday I wondered whether I was both the author and the only reader of this blog. Well, apparently not. First a comment from my colleague Dave Pattern, and now a phone call from SirsDynix to reply to concerns I’d raised below about Rome. Apparently EDIFACT is already there in the current Unicorn so will be continue in Rome, and secondly the ‘Did you mean?’ search functionality which I’d asked for (originally Dave’s point) has been one of the things worked on for Horizon 8 and so should become part of Rome’s OPAC. I’m very relieved (especially at the first, as my acq people would have revolted otherwise!), and also highly impressed that SirsiDynix are monitoring what is being said and taking measures to alleviate worries!

  1. Heh heh — Big Brother (or is that Mother Superior?) is watching you!

Good news about EDIFACT, but shame Jim Wilson didn’t know anything about it.

  2. Looks like we might be back to square one — the latest Rome presentation from SirsiDynix (dated 2nd April and available on the site) says “EDIFACT support planned”, which definitely isn’t the same as being confirmed.

  3. I’m wondering whether they are confusing EDIFACT ordering and EDIFACT reporting. According to some of the Unicorn publicity EDIFACT ordering looks like it has been in the product for a while. I remember in Horizon EDIFACT reporting came considerably later than ordering?

  4. Heh, I’m certainly confused! Both the statements from the US simply said “EDIFACT” and that would imply ordering.

Unless they’re planning to have a “UK enhanced” version of Rome? Lesley Jones said that they currently have to build a UK enhanced version of Unicorn, so maybe that’s what they’ll continue to do with Rome (shudder!)

  5. That wouldn’t surprise me! We’ve had UK versions of Horizon ever since it was first released, even though we were told with each release that the UK enhancements would be rolled into the standard product from ‘next version’. Horizon was declared no longer viable before that version came……
